Persepolis
The story of a childhood
Marjane Satrapi
Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, is an autobiographical graphic novel of a young girl's life during the Islamic Revolution. The panels of the novel are black and white, which give the image of Iran as a black and white country, with strict rules about what is right and what is wrong and about how to dress.
Marji is a ten year old girl and she is forced by the Cultural Revolution in Iran to wear a veil and to go to a school for only girls. She doesn't really understand what is happening so her father explains her the history of the Revolution. Marji thinks that one day she will be a prophet, so she speaks with God and imagines that there will be some day cultural and social equality. Many people are beginning to die in the revolution and others become prisoners. One day some political prisoners are released. Also Marji’s uncle Anoosh comes back from prison and become a hero of the Revolution. An afternoon a group of bomber jets attack Tehran and so the country is officially in war. The food becomes little and many young male children become soldiers. Marji isn’t afraid to express her opinion about the war and after a discussion with her teacher, she is kicked out of school.
I really liked “Persepolis”. It’s an original novel, which contains touching, unpredictable and haunting moments. Also the layout and the distribution of the panels are well studied and good structured.
Ich empfehle dieses Buch, weil ... ...
I would recommend this book to boys and girls, to old and young people, because it deals with subjects that are in the interest of the whole society and also because people should know what really happens in countries that are in war, like Iran.
