Tyranny

Lesley Fairfield

This graphic novel is a very interesting, gripping and unfortunately very likely story about anorexia. Although the age of the female author Lesley Fairfield, she was 50 years old when the novel was released in 2009, the story feels very realistic and near to young girls and teenagers. This is to connect with the fascinating story of the author.  She personally had to fight against a thirty-year struggle with anorexia and bulimia (an eating disorder disease, which is very similar to anorexia).

The touching plot is about Anna, a teenage girl who suffers from anorexia. She is fighting against this cruel eating disorder disease, which affects thousands of girls (and also some boys) all over the world.
In addition, the author gives us a very interesting character to discover in this book: Tyranny.
Tyranny is Anna’s inner voice, which tells her not to eat and that she has to become thinner to be beautiful. Anna always reminds the reader that Tyranny technically is herself and that she is Tyranny. But as the pages go by she begins to hate her other half more and more. You will find out if and how Anna will go trough this difficult situation by reading this enjoyable graphic novel by Lesley Fairfield on your own.

I really liked this book because of its intensity. It never gets boring; it always puts you in a situation that you want to know what comes next and how the story goes on. According to this, it surely deserves a high score under the aspect of entertainment. The language is very good, simple and understandable for beginners, but it also contains some new words which can enrich your vocabulary.

The drawing style (uneven lines are used) is probably a bit childish, but it perfectly communicates what is going on in the story and what the author wants to tell to the reader, so it is very direct.

Ich empfehle dieses Buch, weil ...
... I recommend this book to everyone who is interested in knowing more about this sensitive issue or to everyone who just wants to read a good and not too long graphic novel. It can be very helpful for you if you are looking for a better understanding of eating disorders. It brings you a bit nearer to this world and helps you to understand what there is hidden behind it.I really think that this book deserves to be read, it is very interesting and instructive. As opposed to what you might think, this is a graphic novel for boys, girls, men and women in any age. Because, as I already said, it gives the reader a better viewpoint of this massive modern problem which is anorexia.
