Walther-Square is the real heart of Bozen, named after the famous minstrel Walther von der Vogelweide. They say that he was born in South Tyrol. The big marble statue in the centre of the square was built by the artist Heinrich Natter in 1889. During the time of the Fascists the square was named after the Italian King Vittorio Emmanuele and the monument was removed. After the Second World War the square got its original name back and in 1981 the statue of the minstrel was taken back to its original place. The square is a venue for many cultural events. During the Christmas time there is the famous Christmas Market. Many tourists go to visit it. Festivals are also held there. On Walther Square there are a lot of cafes, which have their tables outside. The people meet there and spend their free time on the square.
