The Gothic church steeple of the cathedral is the landmark of the town. The church is impressing, because of its size and architecture. An early Christian basilica stood on the side of today’s cathedral. Between the 13th and 15th century a late Romanesque - early Gothic church was built while the Baroque chapel was added between 1743 and 1745. More than half of the church was destroyed during the Second World War by bombing. For the reconstruction they used nearly all the old parts. The former parish church was turned into a cathedral in 1964 when the bishop movedfrom Bixen to Bozen.
